At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the wind through the single tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day in day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the puzzle check here on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
